Hi everyone, I've been casually taking photos when I can at Air Sailing/Nevada Soaring. I know several of you guys have photo sharing websites set up. I'd like to post my new and totally UN-comprehensive photo website for anyone interested in seeing ASN/NSA images. It's a Shutterfly site, just navigate to the site as listed below to gain access. It is a "semi" public domain site, so if you'd like to add images of your own to share, comment on existing photos, add names to the faces in the comments, etc - please be invited to do so. (I set it up so you have to request membership to the page before you add content, so that I can easily keep inappropriate content off from random traffic. But it's free and easy to do so) I'd love to see your photos too. So far, there are just a few air to air pictures and a few solo pictures and some movie files on this account. In the future I'd like to make a few edited videos of Air Sailing action and interviews for fun from the image and video stock I collect. For those of you with your own photo share accounts, if you like, please feel invited to post your websites here on the thread so we can rubber neck and see some additional soaring images of fellow club members, etc. Here it is (again, this is in progress, much more to be added): airsailingnevada.shutterfly.com/

Thanks Skimmer, I plan on taking may more videos and pictures over time.
I've nearly completed my first experimental edited video of several of the pictures and clips I've gathered at Air Sailing. I'll post it to the website when I'm done.

airsailingnevada.shutterfly.com/330That's a link to my first two movie files. I've learned a few things: 1) I really like editing movies 2) I need a much better editing program 3) That Mac Book Pro laptop I've been on the fence about for over a year - decision made! 4) I'll make many more videos over the years 5) This first attempt was really fun but it's quite far from what I hoped for 6) You need a TON of material to make a decent movie! I'll keep shooting footage! I hope you all enjoy!

I uploaded my second edited video to the airsailingnevada.shutterfly site. This one is called "Time for Soaring?" Or something like that. It has a few similar images as the first edited video, but also has a majority of different scenes and has a more mellow, broad appeal.
The good news is this second video only took me about 2.5 hours of work to make. So I'm enjoying the learning process. The thing that still frustrates me is the change that occurs when you have a "nearly perfect" video sequence. When you save it for the final cut, there is a significant shift between video and audio that occurs. This makes fast sequences hard to time properly, and often little surprises crop up once the finished product is viewed.
I can see this is more an art than science. Enjoy!

Thanks for the great videos Merlin.
My wife loves video editing as well. She and Coot both use Pinnacle studio for editing and are both very happy with it. I like to use Corel Video studio 12.
Be sure you have as much memory as you can possibly get and a processor that is fast, fast, fast! Tiger Fast! Rhaarh!
We will have a video put together of her first glider flight, that we flew today, posted on the web later on tonight.

That sounds great Skimmer, looking forward to it. When I slapped those two videos together I didn't spend as much time as I would have preferred to, but I had a small window of time and figured I'd give it a go. I plan to revamp my first video (the solos and new pilots) and make some edits to it that I wanted to do right away. And of course now that I've seen it a few times I really want to make those changes! But I can't do that as I'm out of town right now, just having dealt with two engine fires on the same side after takeoff, and another engine failure on downwind, making a single engine approach (with compressor stalls) and landing in an overweight 747-400 - thankfully it's just in the simulator Ha ha ha. By the way the 747-400 makes a "beautifully survivable" one engine approach - feels like you got low, in a headwind, in a 2-33. Just firewall the only engine you have left (like you pushed the speedbrake in all the way in the 2-33) and very carefully move the stick as little as possible as you dog leg to just outside the touchdown zone to maximize the glide "per the numbers". Piece of piss as the Aussies say (didn't know you could have a piece of that unless it was really cold outside, and they are from the desert so what's that all about?).. Keep the dirty side down (or the blue side up if you are looking at the horizon, and not the dirty underside of an airplane), and I look forward to seeing your vidieo. PS- how did she like soaring? Do we have another soaring zelot on our hands, or...?

Hi Ed,
I just watched your videos, great stuff. I noticed on the Reno Air races one that you has a much better camera..HD?? And the finished product was much more polished!
Great job, I loved them. If the camera you used was an HD in wide screen format, I would love to have you film me and Pete from the outside of the plane the next time I go up. Then I can use what I get from the inside and we could really give a complete perspective of what one whole flight looks like.
Let me know if you would be interest.
Thanks, Andrea

Thanks Andrea! I'm still using my same point and shoot camera with video option. Nothing special really for the camera, though I'd love to upgrade those items someday. What I did was change from the Microsoft Movie Maker program to my Macbook laptop using iMovie. I was always able to get reasonable footage with that camera but Apple stuff just really shines in graphics, video and photo work. I learned the basics on Movie Maker and that helped me get more out of iMovie, as iMovie is set up to be "automatic" and the user has little control over the finished product unless you go "manual". So that's what I did, go manual, and using the program in manual mode is more like Movie Maker except the program is very powerful (and a little hard to understand at first). But the more I have looked at it the more I realize what I can do with it.
I am more than happy to help you guys make a movie, I can do whatever you guys like in getting footage for you. I'm sure you are already visualizing the project. Just let me know what you guys would like and I'll do my best to get a few extra angles for you. The one thing I've seen already is the more footage the better, right?
Take it easy, and we'll see you at the gliderport!

I posted a few of my Reno Race stills on my glider website for anyone who is interested in RR09. I was focusing on jet action this year and don't have a lot of Unlimited planes like I've concentrated on in the past.

Glad you liked it Raven, I'll gather up some photos and the vid and put it onto a CD for you! I really didn't have a lot of material, but it was just enough to make something fun to watch I suppose I didn't mean to zoom out of your landing shot, but I was eating a sandwich while filming (multi-taksing) and accidentally zoomed out. I figured I'd just go with the flow so as to not ruin the shot and just take it as it came. Good times!

Goose, thanks!! I also just posted a new video on the L-33.
Thanks to Skimmer for filming my checkout flights in the L-33, those are in the tail end of the video. The bulk of the video covers getting the aircraft out of the trailer, assembly and Chukar's first flight. Thanks to Aaron Derringer for filming Chukar's landing. Both Aaron and I were taking our commercial rides that day and I was up for the oral exam while Chukar was in flight, and Aaron graciously accepted the job of filming the landing. Unfortunately I was not able to get Stoney, Coot, Blackhawk or Skimmer on their first flights as I was pretty busy in the 2-33 that day.
Coot's been on a video and picture bender, I have some major catching up to do just to eat his dust in this department. His latest pictures from his new camera are really great. I see I have to invest in something more than my point and shoot to get better at this stuff. Lots of fun and I'm ready to keep learning (both in soaring and photo/video).

Remember Merlin, it's not the size of your equipment that counts but how you use it. I would hate to see everyone go into a buying frenzy to keep up with the Coots's. ;D
